Rabigh: The G20 Coral Research and Development Accelerator Platform (CORDAP) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has launched its global training program "Coral Restoration Course" in Saudi Arabia to enhance skills and knowledge in coral reef restoration and support international marine ecosystem protection.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the program kicked off with a training course in Rabigh, featuring experts from national marine environmental agencies, and focuses on improving research and restoration efforts in the Red Sea, a crucial and resilient marine ecosystem.
In partnership with the Energy and Water Academy and supported by ACWA Power, the initiative bridges advanced scientific research and practical application in coral restoration by training practitioners in the latest methods. It aims to create a scalable training model that can be expanded internationally, equipping specialists with the skills needed for reef planting and habitat enhancement.
The program emphasizes the Red Sea's scientific importance and the Kingdom's advanced marine research infrastructure, positioning it as a regional hub for marine ecosystem protection. Participants from various national entities, such as Red Sea Global and the National Center for Wildlife, found the program valuable for enhancing their practical skills and understanding of restoration methods.
The training included scientific visits at KAUST, where participants explored cutting-edge coral reef research. Led by international experts from Ocean Revive and the Coralium Lab from UNAM, the program combined theoretical and practical learning.
Ultimately, this initiative aims to develop an international network of experts to implement large-scale coral reef restoration projects, supporting global efforts to conserve marine biodiversity. It reinforces Saudi Arabia's growing role in marine environmental protection and innovation.
