Al-ahsa: The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques aims to highlight and preserve mosques of cultural and religious significance across the Kingdom. The initiative restores these mosques while maintaining their authentic architectural character, aligning with Vision 2030 goals to showcase the Kingdom's cultural heritage.
According to Saudi Press Agency, one notable mosque is Jawatha in Al-Ahsa Governorate. It is historically significant as the first mosque where Friday prayers were held after the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. Built during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by the Bani Abd Al-Qays tribe, it holds an important place in Islamic history. Jawatha is also a significant archaeological site, with ancient mounds containing fragments of pottery and glass that indicate early human settlement in Eastern Region.
Historically, it served as a key trading center frequented by caravans. Restoration efforts have been carried out by the charitable heritage foundation with funding from the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. The project balances traditional standards with modern technologies to ensure sustainability while preserving the mosque's architectural heritage for future generations.
