Philadelphia: Just 24 days after concluding their 2024-25 Premier League season, Manchester City is set to begin their Club World Cup campaign in the United States. The tournament is seen as a fresh start for Pep Guardiola's team, following a challenging previous term. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak expressed that this competition represents a new season for the club.
According to BBC, City has made significant investments, spending over £100 million to enhance their squad for the tournament. This financial commitment positions them as strong contenders against Moroccan champions Wydad AC in Philadelphia. Last season, Guardiola's team failed to secure any major trophies, finishing third in the league and facing early exits in both the Champions League and the FA Cup.
The squad has undergone considerable changes, with the departure of club legend Kevin de Bruyne and the arrival of new talents. Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and French player Rayan Cherki have been brought in to strengthen the lineup. Additionally, Ballon d'Or winner Rodri and Oscar Bobb are back from injury, while Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves will provide a specialized left-back option.
Brazilian winger Savinho expressed satisfaction with the new additions, highlighting their seamless integration into the team. Despite the influx of players, Guardiola emphasized the need for a smaller squad, leading to potential departures of key players like Kyle Walker, Kalvin Phillips, and Jack Grealish.
Midfielder Bernardo Silva, appointed as the new captain, confirmed his decision to remain with the club, entering the final year of his contract. Guardiola's backroom staff has also seen changes, with new assistant coach Pep Lijnders joining from Liverpool, adding to the strategic depth.
The team's preparation sessions in Florida have been intense, with the emphasis on movement, quality, and speed under Lijnders' guidance. Former defender Kolo Toure has also been brought in to assist during the tournament.
With a powerful squad, Manchester City is regarded as one of the favorites to win the Club World Cup. Their performance in Group G, particularly the crucial match against Juventus, will be pivotal in determining their path in the tournament. A potential clash with Real Madrid looms if they finish second, while topping the group could lead to a promising run in the latter stages.
