Saudi Fashion Commission Showcases Cultural Heritage and Innovation at Expo 2025 Osaka

Osaka: The Saudi Fashion Commission marked a powerful presence at Expo 2025 Osaka with a full day of programming that brought together education, heritage, and design. Through a panel discussion and an exhibition of fashion garments at the Saudi Pavilion, the commission offered visitors a look into the heart of its mission: preserving cultural identity while investing in the next generation of Saudi designers.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the exchange centered on the role of culture in shaping creative expression, and how designers today are navigating the space between honoring tradition and embracing innovation. CEO of the Saudi Fashion Commission, Burak Cakmak, emphasized the importance of fostering meaningful exchange, noting that Saudi designers are sharing stories deeply rooted in heritage while engaging with a global audience seeking innovation and cultural relevance.

The discussion also highlighted the significance of cultural exchange. Panelist Okuda reflected on the shared values between Saudi and Japanese design practices, such as attention to detail, deep respect for craftsmanship, and a desire to create with meaning and purpose.

Following the panel, visitors were invited to explore a curated exhibition of ten design pieces from two of the commission's signature initiatives. One initiative, the "Saudi Heritage Revival" competition, developed in partnership with Swarovski, challenged 26 designers to reimagine elements of Saudi heritage through sustainable fashion. Participants used Swarovski's reignited crystals to blend traditional motifs with modern silhouettes. The winner received a training residency at the Saudi design house Dar Al Hanouf, and the top five were selected to participate in an international academic competition by Swarovski.

Another initiative, the "Traditional Handcrafts Revival in Saudi Fashion" program, took place in early 2025 and involved 25 participants in a hands-on workshop. Designers created pieces inspired by local heritage, reworked into contemporary formats. These top designs were first presented at the Saudi Cup and are now showcased on the international stage in Osaka.

Both programs are part of the commission's Education and Talent Development track, focusing on growing local expertise, preserving knowledge of traditional crafts, and creating sustainable career paths for young Saudi designers. The commission views fashion as a cultural medium, encompassing history, craftsmanship, and innovation.

Throughout the day, guests at the Saudi Pavilion viewed the showcased pieces and interacted with commission members. The garments on display were more than just clothing; each piece told a personal story, connecting modern Saudi design to deeper regional cultural roots.

The Saudi Fashion Commission's presence at Expo 2025 underscores its commitment to advancing the creative industries as a key pillar of Vision 2030. Through education, mentorship, and international engagement, the commission is helping to shape a fashion ecosystem that is proudly Saudi, globally relevant, and built to last.
