Riyadh: This evening, Saudi Arabia experienced an exceptional total lunar eclipse, captivating astronomy enthusiasts and photographers as the moon turned a deep crimson red, a phenomenon known as the "Blood Moon." This rare celestial event, not seen with such span and scope since 2018, drew widespread attention across the Kingdom.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the eclipse unfolded in phases, beginning with the moon's gradual entry into the Earth's shadow. This transition led to a total eclipse that lasted for hours, offering a prime opportunity for observation with the naked eye and through telescopes and astrophotography cameras. Eng. Majed Abu Zahra, head of the Jeddah Astronomy Society, explained that the moon's red hue occurs when sunlight is refracted through the Earth's atmosphere, scattering shorter blue wavelengths and allowing longer red and orange wavelengths to illuminate the moon.
This event is part of a series of astronomical phenomena visible in Saudi Arabia's skies this year, emphasizing the significance of observing natural occurrences for the knowledge and insights they provide about the broader universe.
