Najran’s Sorghum Cultivation Enhances Water Conservation and Food Security

General

Najran: Najran Region is experiencing significant growth in the cultivation of ‘Marbi,’ a locally recognized variety of sorghum valued for its high adaptability to arid climates and low water requirements. This crop is grown in two varieties, white and red, and is classified as a summer crop, with planting starting at the beginning of the rainy season and the first harvest at the end of autumn.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Najran farmers favor this crop for its ability to retain soil moisture for extended periods, thanks to its height and dense foliage, which reduces the need for frequent irrigation. Farmer Dalama Haider explained that Marbi cultivation has been a traditional practice in the region for decades. He noted that the crop is widely used as livestock feed, as its tall stalks and tender leaves can be consumed entirely by animals without grinding or crushing.
