Makkah: Makkah is currently witnessing a growing cultural momentum that reflects a qualitative transformation in the intellectual and knowledge landscape of the Holy City. Culture is no longer a limited or seasonal activity; rather, it has become an integral component of a comprehensive development ecosystem aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 to build a vibrant society and enhance quality of life.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the momentum builds on Makkah's historical and religious stature, reaffirming its role today as an active city in knowledge production, the fostering of cultural dialogue, and the activation of its civilizational heritage through contemporary approaches.
As part of the efforts of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, approximately 98 historical and cultural sites in Makkah have been identified, with around 64 classified as priority sites for development and activation. The sites are being transformed into open cultural platforms hosting exhibitions, intellectual forums, and awareness lectures, strengthening the community's connection to the city's history and identity. This approach represents a shift in the concept of heritage preservation, moving from mere physical conservation to sustainable cultural and knowledge activation.
The Makkah Cultural Literary Club continues to play an active cultural role by organizing dozens of literary evenings and intellectual lectures annually, addressing issues of literature, criticism, and cultural identity, with the participation of intellectuals and academics from within the Kingdom and abroad. The club's activities have seen a notable expansion in audience turnout, particularly among youth, reflecting growing cultural awareness and broader engagement with literary and intellectual output.
Umm Al-Qura University plays a pivotal role in supporting the cultural movement through hosting dozens of cultural and scientific seminars and lectures each year, as well as organizing intellectual forums and knowledge-based programs that enhance cultural dialogue and link academic knowledge with the wider community.
Museums and exhibitions in Makkah witnessed significant development with support from the Museums Commission, which organizes periodic exhibitions highlighting Makkah's civilizational history and cultural pathways using modern and interactive display methods. These initiatives have attracted thousands of visitors annually and enhanced cultural awareness across different age groups.
Estimates indicate that attendance at cultural events accompanying seasonal programs has increased by more than 40 percent in recent years compared to previous periods, due to improved accessibility and diversified content. Indicators point to an expansion in the number of annual cultural events, the activation of multiple historical sites as cultural centers, increased youth participation in lectures and seminars, and improved quality and diversity of cultural content.
These indicators confirm that the cultural movement in Makkah has transitioned from a phase of limited activity to one of maturity and integration, supported by coordinated efforts among government entities, cultural institutions, universities, and the local community. This integration reinforces Makkah's position as a city that combines its deep spiritual significance, rich civilizational heritage, and a renewed, dynamic cultural presence.
