It behooves the international community to step up cooperation in the face of the “volatile” events taking place in the region and beyond, Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Al-Sabah told a Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit on Wednesday.

Thanking host nation, Azerbaijan, for the initiative to hold the talks at such a “critical juncture,” the Kuwaiti foreign minister called for more “prudence” in efforts to find lasting solutions to conflicts in the region, lamenting the misery induced by an abundance of crises and disasters seen in the region.

Highlighting the necessity of “unity” in the face of these growing challenges, he said more cooperation was needed to bring the aspirations of the people in the region to fruition, highlighting the “Palestinian cause” as the Arab and Islamic world’s chief concern.

On the conflict in Sudan, the Kuwaiti top diplomat said he was confident that the country’s warring factions are cognizant that Khartoum’s best interests take precedence over individual gain, underling Kuwait’s backing for global efforts aiming to restore peace and stability to Sudan.

He went on call for more “global action” against a growing wave of Islamophobia, in the wake of the burning of the holy Quran by a protestor in Sweden, reiterating Kuwait’s condemnation of such inflammatory incidents.
