Jeddah Astronomy Society: Safar Crescent Moon Graces Saudi Skies

General

Jeddah: The Jeddah Astronomy Society (JAS) confirmed that the crescent moon of the month of Safar graced the skies of Saudi Arabia and the Arab world on Saturday evening.

According to Saudi Press Agency, JAS noted that this phenomenon presents an ideal opportunity for observation, contemplation, and renewing hope for the coming seasons of prosperity. It indicated that the sighting of the Safar crescent coincides with the phenomenon of "Earthshine," in which the dark portion of the moon appears faintly illuminated due to sunlight reflected from Earth onto the lunar surface.

It added that as the moon continues its eastward orbit around Earth, its position in the sky changes daily, making it an ideal reference point for locating celestial objects in the coming weeks. This period is especially favorable for observing faint deep-sky objects-such as galaxies and star clusters-thanks to the dark skies resulting from the absence of bright moonlight, the society said.
