Riyadh: Rich in over 550 wild and grazing plant species, the King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve plays a vital role in nutrient recycling and maintaining the region's ecological balance. Featuring predominantly herbaceous plants and shrubs, the reserve includes Zilla spinosa, a widespread grazing shrub thriving in the reserve's valleys within Northern Borders, Al-Jouf, Tabuk, and Hail regions.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Zilla spinosa is a low-growing perennial with 6-10 inch waxy green leaves with a purplish tint, bearing purple flowers favored by bees. The plant demonstrates notable drought tolerance attributed to its strong, dense root system.
Aligned with Vision 2030's quality of life and preservation goals, the King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Development Authority protects and enhances the reserve's plant cover through projects supporting green spaces and biodiversity, in collaboration with government and local entities, and initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative.
