Riyadh: The Fashion Commission has introduced the Intellectual Property and Designers' Rights Protection Guide for the fashion industry, in a joint effort with the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP).
According to Saudi Press Agency, the initiative emphasizes the commission's commitment to empowering the fashion sector by supporting its community and fostering a developmental environment that addresses all stages of the product value chain. The guide is intended to be a valuable resource for designers, helping them understand and leverage intellectual-property laws to protect and register their innovative designs, thus ensuring legal protection.
The guide strives to nurture a culture of creativity by encouraging designers to develop new creations while safeguarding their rights against replication or intellectual theft. It covers four essential areas within the fashion industry: patents, which include new inventions and technological advancements in fabric and garment production; industrial designs, focusing on aesthetic elements and decorative patterns; copyright, which pertains to artistic outputs such as illustrations and designs; and trademarks, involving logos and symbols that distinguish products in the marketplace.
The Fashion Commission has made the guide accessible to designers and brand owners through its official website. In addition, SAIP facilitates public rights complaints via its website, enabling rights holders or their representatives to report violations related to the Copyright Protection Law and the Trademarks Law.
