At Least 20 Dead in Boat Accident in Uganda

At least 20 people have been reported dead on Wednesday when a cargo boat capsized in Lake Victoria in Uganda.

The cause of the accident is attributed to overloading and bad weather, Uganda police force stated.

Nine of the 34 passengers on board were rescued and the search for more survivors continues.

Similar incidents constantly occur in Lake Victoria and the death toll is often high. Reasons being is the lack of life jackets on board and passengers not knowing how to swim.

In 2017, 126 people died when a ferry sunk on the Tanzanian side of the lake. And in 1996, about 700 people died in a similar accident.

Lake Victoria has a surface area of 70 square kilometers and is shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. (QNA)
