Jazan: Watermelon in Jazan Region remains a prominent summer fruit, adorning local markets and reflecting the deep agricultural expertise of regional farmers. This high-quality, diverse produce has become a refreshing staple on the Ramadan table.
According to Saudi Press Agency, cultivated across approximately 14,000 hectares in the region, Jazan's annual watermelon production exceeds 15,000 tons. The cultivation process begins after rainfall or by irrigating and flooding the land twice before sowing seeds in ideal light, sandy soil rich in organic matter. The crop requires about 90 days to mature, with vines reaching up to three meters in length and each plant yielding between five and seven fruits.
The fruit's diverse varieties present significant opportunities to support food processing industries, ranging from natural juices to various food products. This industrial potential enhances the economic value for local farmers and opens broader marketing avenues.
Watermelon is especially popular during Ramadan, with residents of Jazan frequently including it in their iftar and suhoor meals. Its high water and vitamin content help hydrate the body and replenish fluids depleted during fasting, particularly in warmer weather.
The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture continues to support local farmers and boost production through targeted development and marketing programs. These efforts align with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to diversify the agricultural production base and increase the non-oil sector's contribution to the national GDP.
