Riyadh: Urban development projects that harmonize environmental preservation with thoughtfully integrated recreational spaces are shaping a new vision for major cities. These initiatives not only enhance quality of life but also strengthen the connection between people and their natural surroundings, transforming natural landscapes into open urban oases where residents and visitors alike can enjoy safe and sustainable outdoor experiences.
According to Saudi Press Agency, one such initiative is the development of Wadi Hanifa, now one of the key destinations within Riyadh's Sports Boulevard project. Stretching 13.4 kilometers from Al-Olab Dam in the north to Jeddah Road in the south, Wadi Hanifa has been transformed into a pioneering example of environmental integration in an urban setting. The design preserves the area's natural topography while introducing a wide range of amenities that cater to diverse visitor needs.
The project features dedicated walking trails, as well as cycling and horse-riding paths, all seamlessly woven into the natural landscape. Along the way, visitors can enjoy rest areas, service facilities, shaded zones, and parking lots-enhancing Wadi Hanifa's appeal as an open-air destination ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
Speaking to the Saudi Press Agency, cycling enthusiast Ziyad Al-Kathiri noted the area's growing popularity, particularly during the summer months. He attributed this to the dense greenery and natural shade, which help cool the environment, along with the shaded trails and well-planned infrastructure that make sports activities more accessible-even during hotter periods that once posed challenges for recreation.
Wadi Hanifa exemplifies an advanced approach to urban planning-an environmental asset rehabilitated to serve both people and place, contributing to the vision of a future city built on sustainability and vibrant living.
