Samara: Russian medical teams have successfully performed what was described as the world's first skull base surgery on a 101-year-old patient at a hospital affiliated with Samara State Medical University.
According to Saudi Press Agency, doctors stated that the procedure was performed after the patient developed sphenoid sinusitis. The elderly patient remained under medical observation at the hospital for a week before being discharged following an improvement in his condition.
The decision to perform the surgery was prompted by the seriousness of the patient's condition. While the hospital routinely carries out such procedures, this was the first time one had been performed on a patient of this age.
The case highlights the potential for reassessing age-related restrictions on certain surgical procedures, particularly as modern medical technologies become more advanced and clear clinical indications support the prospects of successful outcomes.
