UNIFIL: Situation in Lebanon is “calm”

The current situation in south Lebanon is now calm, said Kandice Ardiel, media office deputy director of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), on Saturday.

In a news statement, Ardiel said dozens of individuals crossed this morning to south of the Blue Line in Bastra area and Israeli army fired tear gas.

She added that UNIFIL peacekeepers, the Lebanese army and the Israeli army “are all at the site and the situation continues, but it is calm now”, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).

She noted that UNIFIL head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Arold Lazaro, speaks with authorities on both sides of the Blue Line.

Ardiel indicated that a number of incidents in recent days have raised “tensions”.

Thanks to the commitment of the parties on both sides of the Blue Line, these incidents have not escalated further, she emphasized. “We encourage everyone to continue to exercise the same level of restraint in the hours and days ahead,” she said.

Meanwhile, the NAA reported that the Israeli occupation forces fired tear gas towards Lebanese MP Qassem Hashem accompanied by some journalists at the line, wounding him and some journalists.

Two days ago, Ardiel warned that the situation across the Blue Line between Lebanon and Israel is “extremely sensitive”.

Three members of Hezbollah group were injured by Israeli fire near the border village of Al-Bustan, according to media reports.
