The United Nations announced today the suspension of its humanitarian operations in Niger due to the coup that the country witnessed.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Niger has risen from 1.9 million in 2017 to 4.3 million in 2023. It is expected that the number of victims of severe food insecurity will reach three million people between June and August before the next harvest.
Yesterday, the Presidential Guard in Niger detained President Bazoum at the presidential palace, while several countries and international organizations expressed condemnation for any attempt to seize power by force in Niger.
Earlier today, military officials announced on national television that they have removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power. The situation in Niamey remains uncertain, with institutions suspended, and the country’s borders closed.
