Traditional Crafts Shine at Banan Exhibition

General

Riyadh: At the 2025 Saudi International Handicrafts Week (Banan) exhibition, artisans showcased a diverse collection of traditional crafts that reflect Saudi Arabia's rich heritage. The crafts included gypsum work, pottery, palm frond weaving, Sadu weaving, artistic painting, and Arabic calligraphy.

According to Saudi Press Agency, artisans conveyed that gypsum craft involves mixing, shaping, and carving gypsum into decorative pieces inspired by local identities and architectural elements.

In palm frond weaving, materials include palm fronds, burlap, and velvet-covered wood, with designs varying by region. This craft exemplifies innovation within tradition while showcasing local aesthetics.

Artistic paintings on wood utilize techniques like thread embroidery, thermal printing, and oil coloring, resulting in precise and unique artworks.

Sadu weaving is based on natural materials like sheep's wool, camel hair, and goat hair. The process starts with shearing wool, followed by carding, cleaning, and spinning. Originally essential for daily life, Sadu has evolved into a decorative craft used for items such as medals, wall hangings, and traditional clothing.

The artisans emphasized that their works reflect authentic skills, preserve Saudi craft heritage, and highlight regional identities. The exhibition also features live demonstrations of traditional production techniques.
