Hundreds of new oil and gas licenses will be granted in the UK, said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Monday , as the UK Government continues to back the North Sea oil and gas industry as part of drive to make Britain more energy independent.
In a statement, Sunak stressed that Russia’s energy monopoly led to the suspension of economic growth in the world, adding, “Therefore, it has become very important to enhance energy security and benefit from this independence to provide a greater amount of clean energy at a low cost to homes and business centers In Britain.” “Even when we’ve reached net zero in 2050, a quarter of our energy needs will come from oil and gas. But there are those who would rather that it come from hostile states than from the supplies we have here at home,” he added.
Today’s commitment to power ahead with new oil and gas licenses will drive forward the UK’s energy independence and economy for generations, said the British prime minister.
