Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center Takes Part in MENA Climate Week 2023

General

The Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center is participating in the MENA Climate Week 2023, which started yesterday in Riyadh, alongside representatives of high-level international institutions working in the field.

The center is going to present the Kingdom's initiatives and contributions to addressing climate change.

The center, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), will tackle the impact of dust and sandstorms and the challenges the region faces due to these phenomena. It will focus on their negative effects on individuals and on effective ways to confront and mitigate their impact.

The fact that the center participates in the MENA Climate Week emphasizes the importance of scientific research and exchange of experiences, information and data, at the local and regional levels, in understanding the impact of dust and sandstorms and achieving environmental sustainability, which is the main goal of the Middle East Green Initiative and the Saudi Green Initiative.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has recently given accreditation to the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center, and granted it full membership in the Global Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (SDS-WAS) Steering Committee, as a representative of the regional unit of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

The Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center works to protect the environment from natural hazards by monitoring dust and sand phenomena in the Kingdom, and giving early warning about storms, for people to take preventive measures and mitigate their impact.
