Riyadh: Reptiles constitute an important part of biodiversity, contributing to enriching the natural environment and maintaining ecological balance in Northern Borders Region.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Northern Borders Region is home to various reptile species and is distinguished by its unique environmental diversity and ecosystems based on natural features, due to its vast area and geographic characteristics. Notable species include the Arabian spiny-tailed lizard, the desert monitor, the sandy mountain judge lizard, and the horned field snake.
Reptiles are a fundamental part of the food chain, serving as a food source for many other animals and helping control pests and insects in their habitats. They also regulate the environment by maintaining the balance of their prey and predators and preventing excessive plant growth by consuming small mammals and reptiles that feed on vegetation.
Snakes, as predators of insects and mammals, help preserve ecological balance by reducing harmful insects and limiting the diseases they carry. Some lizards also contribute by dispersing plant seeds, supporting continued plant growth.
Head of the Aman Environmental Association in Northern Borders Region Nasser Arshid Al-Majlad indicated that reptiles adapt to their environment in several ways. He said that key methods include regulating body temperature, as a reptile's temperature changes when exposed to sun or shade, with the body efficiently maintaining its thermal balance.
Reptiles can also change the color of their skin, which helps them blend into their surroundings and hide from predators, Al-Majlad noted. He added that they adjust to seasonal changes by altering their diet and behavior, aiding survival, and they can adapt to dry conditions thanks to their ability to conserve water and tolerate heat.
Moreover, Al-Majlad said that the conservation of all types of wildlife is a key goal for the Kingdom due to their role in restoring ecological balance. Royal reserves and environmental societies in the region are making significant efforts to restore natural habitats, preserve biodiversity, and reintroduce endangered native species to their natural environments, in line with Saudi Vision 2030 to improve the quality of life, he said.
