Riyadh: The Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program "Reef Saudi" is casting a wide net to revitalize the Kingdom's fish sector. Over the past year, 2023, the program has invested a significant sum of SAR 86 million in 16 projects, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to this crucial industry. According to the program, this investment reflects Reef Saudi's recognition of the vital role fish production plays in securing the Kingdom's food supply. It aims to not only boost domestic production of marine products and reduce reliance on imports but also create valuable employment opportunities for young Saudis looking to make a splash in the fishing industry. Their approach is multifaceted, employing a mix of strategies to achieve long-term sustainable growth. One key area of focus is modernizing fish farming techniques, with the program working to improve aquaculture methods to increase overall productivity in the sector. Additionally, Reef Saudi recognizes the importance of empowering small-scale f ishermen who are the backbone of the industry. It provides essential services like extension programs, technical support, and assistance in establishing cooperative societies to give these fishermen a stronger voice and support network. Investing in infrastructure is another pillar of the program's strategy. Upgrading fishermen's ports and local markets is crucial for efficiency, while improvements in marketing efficiency will ensure their catch reaches consumers quickly and profitably. Reef Saudi also recognizes the importance of fostering an environment that encourages entrepreneurship and skill development within the industry. It is actively promoting the creation of fish farming incubators and providing training programs to enhance the skills of both fishermen and fish breeders, all with the goal of building a more robust and innovative fishing sector. Sustainability is also a core value for Reef Saudi. The program champions environmentally responsible practices and advocates for the sustainable managem ent of coastal ecosystems, particularly mangroves. This commitment was evident in their 2023 achievements, which included the implementation of three new management practices that emphasize responsible fisheries and the preservation of ecosystems. The year 2023 proved to be a productive one for Reef Saudi. A pilot project launched in October 2023 saw 100 small-scale fishermen from Jeddah, Dammam, and the Farasan Islands participating in seaweed production, a high-value product with promising future potential. Additionally, the program actively supported women interested in pursuing careers in seafood marketing by offering consultations and guidance. Direct support for fishermen remains a cornerstone of the program. Reef Saudi has equipped small fishing boats with emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), a vital safety measure in case of emergencies at sea. It has also provided essential engines and established maintenance centers across various regions to ensure fishermen have access to reliabl e equipment. Furthermore, knowledge-sharing initiatives like guidance convoys focusing on livestock and fisheries were organized throughout the Kingdom. The program also developed an electronic platform specifically designed to support small fishermen. Source: Saudi Press Agency
