Riyadh: The skies over the Kingdom last night witnessed the conjunction of the Pleiades star cluster with the Moon, an astronomical phenomenon known in Arab tradition as the 'Seventh Qiran' (conjunction). It is considered one of the seasonal markers associated with the beginning of spring and the accompanying climatic changes and signs of fertility.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Member of the Astronomy and Space Club Mohammed Al-Hazimi noted that this conjunction symbolizes improving weather conditions and the onset of moderate temperatures. He remarked that February 23 marks the beginning of the Seventh Qiran, which Bedouins regard as an indicator of the start of the spring season.
He added that this conjunction lasts approximately 27 days, during which noticeable climatic shifts occur, contributing to the growth of wild plants and the flourishing of vegetation cover. It is also associated with the season of desert truffles emerging in several regions of the Kingdom.
The conjunction of the Pleiades with the Moon is among the celestial phenomena that historically drew the attention of Arabs, who relied on it to identify seasons and weather patterns. It continues to attract the interest of astronomy enthusiasts and those interested in folk heritage as a natural indicator of the beginning of a new climatic phase.
