General

Riyadh: In the vibrant setting of the Saudi International Handicrafts Week, known as Banan, the cultural distance between Riyadh and Mexico seemed to be bridged through the universal language of art and craftsmanship. The exhibition featured artisans Aida Aquino Boyo from Oaxaca and Cecilia Cortes Morales from Michoac¡n, each representing the rich heritage of their respective regions with their unique craftsmanship.

According to Saudi Press Agency, this cultural exchange was made possible through the meticulous efforts of the Heritage Commission. The event transformed Banan into a dynamic space where international artistic traditions were celebrated, ensuring that artisans like Aida and Cecilia felt their work and stories were appreciated and respected.

Aida Aquino Boyo's clay craftsmanship represented more than mere decorative art; it was a testament to the collective memory and traditions of Oaxaca. Her process of transforming clay into art-through kneading, shaping, and firing-illustrates the deep-rooted artisan traditions of her region. Aida expressed her desire for visitors to appreciate the beauty of distant communities and how they convey their identity through tangible creations. Her participation in the event was significant, as she felt honored to represent her community and its artistic legacy.

Cecilia Cortes Morales, on the other hand, brought attention to the craft of working with colored iron and metal strips, a practice she has mastered over thirty-four years. Her intricate process begins with cutting and shaping iron strips, followed by coloring and assembling them into complex, layered designs. Each piece reflects the meticulous nature of her craft and the cultural stories of Michoac¡n.
