Madinah: Madinah Region Governor and Al Madinah Region Development Authority Board Chairman Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz affirmed that the palm and date sector is one of the strategic pillars of the national economy, thanks to the wise leadership's generous support. Prince Salman noted that this support has enhanced the competitiveness of Saudi dates, strengthened their presence in global markets, and reinforced their pivotal role in the local economy.
According to Saudi Press Agency, his remarks came during the governor's inauguration of the Madinah Central Dates Market at the Food City project, whose first phase covers more than 37,000 square meters as part of municipal investment projects in the region.
Prince Salman highlighted Madinah's exceptional comparative advantage in date production and processing industries, citing the diversity and quality of its varieties, which grant the region a competitive position nationally and internationally.
He stated that the opening of the Central Dates Market represents a qualitative leap in organizing and developing the vital sector, creating a modern platform to support producers and farmers and expand marketing opportunities, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 to diversify the national economy.
The market is one of the main platforms within the Food City project, which spans 1 million square meters and includes central markets for vegetables, fruits, meat, and poultry, along with an integrated logistics system. The site is strategically located at the intersection of King Khalid bin Abdulaziz Road (Third Ring Road) and Ali bin Abi Talib Road.
Prince Salman also inaugurated the 'That Nakhal Forum for Premium Dates,' which brings together experts, specialists, farmers, and producers to exchange expertise and showcase the latest technologies and innovations in the date sector.
During his tour, he visited the exhibition and museum 'That Nakhal: History and Civilization,' where he was briefed on its displays highlighting Madinah's history through pictures, archaeological inscriptions, and interactive exhibits.
Al Madinah Logistics Services Company board chairman Eng. Anas Sayrafi - the project developer - delivered a speech outlining the project's importance in supporting the palm and date sector and emphasizing the partnership between the public and private sectors in strengthening Madinah's food ecosystem.
The second phase of infrastructure work for the Central Dates Market was launched, which includes expanding facilities and enhancing operational services. The establishment of the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market within the Food City project was also announced, reflecting the continued development of the food sector in Madinah.
As part of the forum's activities, Prince Salman honored the winners of the 'TamraThon' hackathon, organized by Taibah Valley Company and sponsored by Al Madinah Logistics Services Company, celebrating innovators and entrepreneurs developing technical solutions to advance the date sector.
The governor also attended the signing of several agreements, including partnerships between Al Madinah Logistics Services Company and Buna Al Mamlika Holding Company to launch the second phase of Food City, and agreements to manage, operate, and provide digital solutions to enhance the market's operational performance.
Additionally, a cooperation agreement was signed between Germany's Food Up GmbH and Khairat Takaful for Industry, an affiliate of the Takaful Charitable Society for Orphan Care, to purchase and supply the society's farm-produced dates, providing a sustainable source of support for its programs.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Prince Salman honored the sponsors and partners of the forum and posed for commemorative photos.
