Abha: Researchers at King Khalid University in Abha have developed an innovative scientific method to process biomass byproducts from Hasawi rice, such as husk and straw, transforming them into new industrial products while preserving the environment and reducing pollution caused by burning rice waste.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Hasawi rice waste, including husk and straw, is often burned in fields, leading to significant environmental pollution. This research project aims to utilize these byproducts in an eco-friendly manner.
The invention introduces a cost-effective scientific and practical method for processing rice husk and straw using chemical treatments to produce valuable industrial materials such as mesoporous silica, activated carbon, graphene oxide, and lignocellulose. These materials are widely used in manufacturing glass, ceramics, catalysts, supercapacitors, biofuels, water desalination systems, and biomedical applications. They also enable precise drug delivery to targeted cells and the production of high-quality paper.
The conversion process involves a series of sequential chemical treatments to obtain different products, representing a model approach for recycling agricultural waste and maximizing its utilization. This method offers selective alternatives to address environmental challenges while reducing reliance on imported materials.
The initial registration of these products has been completed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and the final registration process is underway.
