Riyadh: The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) has placed significant emphasis on traditional handicrafts through art exhibitions and initiatives, showcasing the depth of the artistic relationship with cultural heritage. As part of its efforts, Ithra has unveiled the Eastern Region (Alsharqiya) gates, dating back to the early 20th century, as a gift to the people of the region on the fifth anniversary of the "Alsharqiya Gets Creative" initiative. Placed along Dammam Corniche's coastal road, these gates narrate the region's creative history visually and engagingly, capturing the essence of the past with historical significance while inspiring future generations.
According to Saudi Press Agency, in an interview with sculptor Hassan Al-Hussein, the artisan behind these doors, he believed that these gates carry in their inscriptions and decorations the stories and thoughts carved by ancestors, reflecting their deep connection to their heritage. He also highlighted that woodworking is one of the professions rooted in Saudi society.
Recognizing the significance of handicrafts as a unique art form, Ithra presented these gates to celebrate the Year of Handicrafts 2025. This collection of traditional doors showcases the region's rich cultural heritage and celebrates its vibrant creative diversity.
