International Day of the Seafarer: Highlighting Seafarers’ Welfare and Ensuring Safe Maritime Navigation

Riyadh: The International Day of the Seafarer is observed annually on June 25 and was established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This day aims to draw attention to the vital role seafarers play as the backbone of maritime operations and to promote their safety and welfare. It also highlights the importance of adhering to maritime safety and security standards to ensure safe navigation across the world's oceans.

According to Saudi Press Agency, given its strategic location, the Kingdom actively supports numerous initiatives aimed at protecting the global marine environment. Positioned as a vital international logistics hub linking Europe, Asia, and Africa, approximately 13% of global trade passes through its waterways, including the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf.

The Transport General Authority (TGA) is dedicated to strengthening the role of seafarers within the maritime sector and enhancing efforts to ensure their safety. The authority also highlights key initiatives supported by the Kingdom to empower and develop the maritime industry, including the GloLitter initiative, which assists developing countries in preventing and reducing marine plastic pollution caused by maritime transport and fisheries activities.

Boasting a strategic location linking three continents, the Kingdom's National Transport and Logistics Strategy aims to strengthen its pivotal role on the global stage and establish it as a leading international logistics hub.
