Jeddah: The historic Italian sailing vessel Amerigo Vespucci docked in Jeddah on Monday, witnessed by Assistant Minister of Defense Talal bin Abdullah Al-Otaibi, along with Italy's Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto and Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanche.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Al-Otaibi, representing Minister of Defense Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, emphasized the significance of such occasions in enhancing the Kingdom's status as a global hub for cultural and tourism cooperation. He highlighted the collaboration between Saudi Arabia and Italy, which encompasses various developmental aspects and opportunities for technology transfer and localization in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030.
During the ceremony, the Italian defense minister commended the strong and friendly relations between the two nations. Crosetto expressed pride in the Amerigo Vespucci's presence in Jeddah, emphasizing the vessel as a historic maritime symbol that reflects Italy's rich naval heritage. He added the occasion embodies cultural exchange between the Kingdom and Italy.
Captain Giuseppe Lai, the commander of the Amerigo Vespucci, provided a brief overview of the vessel's maritime legacy and its extensive sailing history. He underscored the event's importance in drawing attention to Jeddah as one of the region's vibrant tourist destinations.
Al-Otaibi and Crosetto then toured the ship, exploring its unique features and its history spanning over 93 years.
On the sidelines of the ceremony, Al-Otaibi and Crosetto discussed bilateral cooperation in military and defense industries, addressing various issues of mutual interest.
Saudi officials attending the ceremony included Jeddah Mayor Saleh Al-Turki and Ministry of Defense Undersecretary for Strategic Affairs Major General Salman Al-Harbi.
