Riyadh: The Heritage Commission signed a memorandum of understanding with Al-Ahsa Development Authority on Monday evening to enhance cooperation in protecting and developing the governorate's heritage sites as sustainable cultural and investment destinations. This initiative aims to strengthen the Kingdom's status as a leading world heritage region recognized by UNESCO. The signing took place during the Saudi International Handicrafts Week (Banan) in Riyadh.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the MoU outlines joint efforts for the protection, adaptive reuse, and documentation of heritage sites. It includes developing programs to promote research, support local artisans, and empower entrepreneurs in heritage activities. Additionally, it covers the exchange of cultural research relevant to Al-Ahsa and participation in preparing the management plan for the World Heritage-listed Al-Ahsa Oasis sites.
Areas of cooperation also involve promoting local investments in the heritage sector by creating opportunities for investors and marketing historical sites to ensure sustainability while preserving their authentic character.
Al-Ahsa stands out as a key heritage site in the Kingdom, featuring unique cultural, historical, and natural attributes that earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It serves as a model for preserving national heritage and utilizing it for sustainable development, enhancing its status as a prominent cultural destination.
