Half of Sudan’s population in need of urgent assistance, UN official

New York: Half of Sudan’s 25 million people are in need of urgent assistance, said Joyce Msuya, Assistant UN Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Speaking in Paris on Monday at a high-level pledging conference for Sudan and its neighbors, Msuya stressed the need for improved humanitarian access to Sudan, as well as increased resources, noting that the recent escalation in El Fasher raises the specter of greater danger for civilians in Darfur.

All pledges will help maintain and expand humanitarian operations inside Sudan and across the region, she told donors attending the conference.
