The European Union Wednesday said that it is following with “great concern” the events taking place in Niamey following a mutiny by part of the presidential guard at the residence of President Mohamed Bazoum.

“At this time, the situation remains tense,” said EU High Representative Josep Borrell in a Declaration on behalf of the 27-member bloc.

“We reaffirm our full support for President Bazoum and our conviction that Niger is an indispensable partner of the European Union in the Sahel, whose destabilization would not serve the interests of anyone in the country, the region and beyond,” he said.

The EU fully associates itself with the statements of the African Union and the current ECOWAS Presidency in strongly condemning this attack on democratic institutions and this attempt to destabilize the country, he noted.

The EU stands ready to support its partners in the ongoing efforts to find a peaceful solution to this coup attempt, added the Declaration.
