Echium Horridum: A Botanical Jewel of AlUla’s Desert

General

Riyadh: Amid the diverse landscapes of AlUla, the Echium horridum plant emerges as a striking emblem of the region's desert ecosystem. Renowned for its unique beauty and valuable properties, it embodies the rich botanical diversity that thrives in AlUla's unique environment.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the plant is recognized by its delicate, bell-shaped pink flowers and slender, velvety leaves, which lend it a striking appearance and create a vivid contrast against the arid backdrop, especially during its blooming season. It has also adapted to thrive in a variety of soil types and is highly resilient and capable of withstanding drought and temperature fluctuations.

Beyond its visual appeal, the Echium horridum has long been valued for its practical uses. Its roots yield a red dye traditionally used in both cooking and cosmetics, while oils extracted from its parts are incorporated into skincare products for their natural properties.

As part of its ongoing efforts to preserve AlUla's biodiversity, the Royal Commission for AlUla works to document and protect native flora, such as the Echium horridum. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to environmental sustainability and align with AlUla's growing reputation as a global destination for ecological and cultural tourism.
