Britain signs treaty to join Trans-Pacific bloc

Britain signed a treaty confirming accession to the vast Indo-Pacific Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) bloc, the Ministry of Trade and Business said in a press release on Sunday.

The 11-member CPTPP includes Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, New Zealand, Australia, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Japan. Britain would be the first European nation to join the bloc, which the government says would unlock trade to a region with a total Gross Domestic Product of GBP 12 trillion (USD 15.7 trillion), it said.

The deal will now receive parliamentary scrutiny in the UK, while other CPTPP nations will also complete their own legislative processes, it added.
