Berlin: US President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine in an effort to bolster its defense against Russian aggression. This decision follows a brief halt in arms shipments by the Trump administration and involves a financial arrangement where the European Union will compensate the US for the missile systems sent to Ukraine.

According to Deutsche Welle, there is no confirmation yet on the number of Patriot units to be deployed or any additional US arms that may be included in the package. However, Germany has agreed to cover the expenses for at least two Patriot batteries. The Patriot missile system, manufactured by Raytheon, is a sophisticated surface-to-air missile (SAM) system capable of intercepting high-flying aircraft and tactical ballistic missiles, providing a critical defense against airborne threats used by Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

The Patriot systems are fully mobile and consist of a command center, radar station, and launchers. They are designed to defend against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, and aircraft, although they may face challenges in intercepting smaller, low-flying devices such as mini drones. Each unit requires approximately 90 troops to operate and covers an area of about 68 kilometers, with the capability to track up to 50 targets and engage five simultaneously.

The agreement comes as German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius visits Washington to discuss the details of the deal with US defense officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. This meeting is expected to address the US-NATO relationship and the deployment of US long-range missile systems in Germany next year. Germany's facilitation of the deal is part of its ongoing support for Ukraine, especially as US support has waned since Trump's return to the White House.

While Germany is funding the deployment of Patriot systems, it has decided not to provide long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. The Taurus KEPD 350, a joint German-Swedish cruise missile, offers a greater range than the Patriot system. Despite previous support from German Chancellor Frederich Merz for sending Taurus systems, Germany now focuses on aiding Ukraine in developing its own long-range capabilities. Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautioned Germany against supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

Ukraine's defense against Russian attacks has also involved a mix of other missile systems, including Russian-made Buks and S-300s, US-made Hawk missiles, and modern SAM systems like NASAMS. Additionally, Ukraine has deployed US-made ATACMS missiles, which have a range of 300 kilometers, following the lifting of a ban by former President Biden.

The Kremlin has previously warned against sending Patriot systems to Ukraine, and current remarks from Russian officials indicate continued disapproval of the arms supply. This move by the Trump administration comes amidst strained relations between Trump and Putin. President Trump expressed his disappointment with Putin, criticizing the Russian leader's actions in Ukraine despite their previous discussions.

The decision to send Patriot systems is a significant development in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the complex geopolitical dynamics at play and the international efforts to support Ukraine's defense capabilities.
