Aswan: Aswan's "Island of Plants," an 18-acre botanical garden nestled on the Nile River, boasts a history spanning over two centuries. This unique oasis houses a diverse collection of 767 plant species, categorized by use, including timber trees, tropical and subtropical fruit trees, aromatic plants, spices, and ornamental varieties.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the island, formed by the Nile River covering granite bedrock, serves as a living museum and a vital research site for studying plant adaptation to hot climates. Since 1928, the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture has diligently introduced a wide range of tropical and subtropical plant species to the island.
The island also features a herbarium containing 1779 dried plant specimens, complementing its botanical treasures. A captivating museum showcases a fascinating array of fruits and seeds, while a meticulously organized seed bank preserves 393 species from 79 families, ensuring easy access and future research opportunities.
