Alula: The Arabian spiny-tailed lizard (Uromastyx aegyptia) has shown a growing presence in the natural environments of AlUla Governorate in recent years, reflecting improved environmental conditions and the success of protection programs, following a period of decline linked to hunting and fluctuating climatic conditions.
According to Saudi Press Agency, in Sharaan Nature Reserve, which extends over approximately 1,540 square kilometers, a notable increase in Arabian spiny-tailed lizard populations has been observed as a result of integrated measures, including the protection of threatened species, their reintroduction, the rehabilitation of natural habitats, and the reduction of human impacts on ecological balance.
Recovery indicators have extended beyond reserve boundaries, with the species observed across multiple locations in AlUla, indicating the restoration of part of the natural balance and the effectiveness of efforts in environmental management and development according to a sustainable approach.
Community awareness has emerged as a key supporting factor in the success of these efforts through increased compliance with environmental regulations and a decline in unauthorized hunting practices.
