Arab League welcomes UNHRC decision condemning religious hatred

Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmad Aboul-Gheit welcomed Thursday the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) decision condemning religious hatred like burning the Holy Quran.

This decision renews responsibility all parties bear to denounce publicly calls for religious hatred including desecrating the sacred books and hold the perpetrators accountable, Aboul-Gheit said in a statement.

He condemned, in the strongest terms, the permission of Sweden’s authority on burning a copy of the Holy Quran by an extremist on the first day of Eid Al-Adha, holding them responsibility of facing such acts, the statement said.

It renewed Aboul-Gheit’s call for all countries to adopt this decision and work to face escalation of hatred waves among peoples through reviewing some of their laws and policies, which do not combat firmly religious hatred.

The statement stressed the need to hold the perpetrators of hatred and incitement crimes accountable, and take immediate steps against the legal loopholes in this matter.

The Arab League’s Secretariat took part in the voting process on the decision on July 8, as 28 countries voted in favor, 12 against and seven abstained.
