Riyadh: The first phase of the AlUla Dates Season for this year, which featured the weekend date auction, has concluded, while the second phase-represented by the farmers' market-has begun and will continue until November 15. The event is part of the Royal Commission for AlUla's efforts to support agricultural development and enhance the economic returns of the sector.
According to Saudi Press Agency, this annual event embodies the essence of 'Khayrat AlUla,' one of the area's key agricultural resources. It reflects farmers' deep-rooted passion and historical bond with palm cultivation and highlights AlUla's growing role in boosting food security and diversifying the local economy in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
AlUla is home to more than 4.1 million palm trees spread across an area exceeding 15,000 hectares, producing nearly 170,000 tons of dates annually, reaffirming its position as one of the Kingdom's most important agricultural oases.
During the 2023 dates season, the auction generated sales exceeding SAR12.8 million, along with SAR400,000 from the accompanying market, attracting over 15,000 visitors. In the 2024 season, sales volumes reached approximately 1.7 million kilograms, with total revenues exceeding SAR8.8 million. Expectations indicate an increase in sales during the 2025 season, which will be announced at the conclusion of the ongoing activities.
In recent years, AlUla's agricultural sector has witnessed remarkable growth, including training more than 2,500 beneficiaries, among them 95 farmers and 250 students, accrediting 250 farms under the Saudi Dates Program, and treating over 120,000 palm trees through fertilization and pest control operations. Additionally, opening local markets such as AlManshiyah market has helped connect visitors and consumers directly with farmers, further promoting regional and international marketing of agricultural products.
