The Jazan region is famous for the cultivation of aromatic plants, foremost of them the Arabian jasmine. This flower, along with hala tree (Pandanus tectorius), narcissus and other aromatic plants have been part of the folklore and social heritage, associated with marriage ceremonies, holidays, receiving guests, celebrating birthdays and gifts of high value that are presented to visitors to Jazan on all occasions.
Due to the importance of the Arabian jasmine to the people of Jazan, farmers expanded its cultivation; now it is planted in over 950 farms in the region, according to recent statistics issued by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture.
Farmers cultivating Arabian jasmine established the Association of Arabian Jasmine and Aromatic Plants, in Jazan, in 1443 Hijri. Its chairman, Mohammed Al-Hobani, said that the association “aims to be a pioneer in the cultivation of Arabian jasmine and aromatic plants and downstream industries, and to provide comprehensive investment solutions for all farmers and those interested”.
The Jazan Chamber of Commerce recently completed economic studies for a SAR44-million Essential Oils Manufacturer project as an investment opportunity.
The production capacity of the 3,000-square-meter project, located in the Jazan Economic City, is 100 tons annually.
The project profitability index and rate of return on investment are estimated at 530%, with an internal rate of return of 23% and a four-year capital recovery.
