Vachellia Tortilis: Natural Element Enhancing Environmental Balance in Jazan

Jazan: The Jazan Region showcases across its diverse terrain a rich and vibrant natural landscape, where mountains, plains, and coasts blend into a harmonious environmental scene. At the heart of this diversity stands the samr tree, one of the most prominent symbols of vegetation cover and an active ecological element that contributes to reinforcing natural balance and improving quality of life.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the samr tree, scientifically known as Vachellia tortilis, is a perennial desert thorn tree that has efficiently adapted to the harsh climatic conditions of Jazan. It is characterized by sharp thorns that reduce water loss, along with its small, finely divided compound leaves that help minimize evaporation and withstand drought.

The samr tree typically ranges in height from five to nine meters and may reach up to 12 meters under suitable conditions. Its fruits are twisted pods measuring about 15 centimeters in length, containing seeds, and it serves as an important source of feed for livestock, particularly camels, goats, and sheep.

Samr wood is considered one of the best types of firewood due to its slow-burning nature, long-lasting embers, and minimal smoke, making it a preferred choice for traditional uses.
