US man indicted for acting as alleged China agent – Justice Dept

A Massachusetts man was arrested last week for allegedly acting as an agent of China, without providing notification to the US Attorney General, the Justice Department said on Monday.

Litang Liang, 63, was indicted on one count of acting as an agent of a foreign government without providing notification to the US Attorney General, in addition to a count of conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government without providing notification to the U.S. Attorney General.

“We will not tolerate the PRC’s efforts to interfere with public discourse and threaten civic participation in the US,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen was quoted as saying in a department statement.

According to the charges levelled against him, in 2018 through at least 2022, Liang acted within the US as an agent of the Chinese government by allegedly providing Beijing with information on Boston-area individuals and organizations.
