Riyadh: During a dialogue session at the Arab European Cities Dialogue (AECD 2025), international urban development experts underscored the significance of a people-focused approach in urban planning, rather than relying solely on technology. They discussed how prioritizing human needs can help cities better prepare for future challenges through innovation and community engagement.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the discussions also focused on the role of hosting major events in fostering sustainable development, social cohesion, and local identity. The session provided a platform for European and Arab cities to share experiences on managing such events to build resilient and advanced urban economies.
Experts showcased successful examples where major events created lasting impacts through smart infrastructure and citizen engagement. They also highlighted how these events contribute beyond the host cities, facilitating collaboration and knowledge exchange across a wider urban network.
The AECD, a leading global event attracting over 25,000 specialists and 1,000 companies annually, has driven significant urban changes in Barcelona, including reducing car dependence, improving public transport, adopting sustainable practices, and enhancing social inclusion and gender equality.
