Riyadh: The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy, has embarked on the qualification process for the initial batch of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. This first group comprises four projects designed to bolster the Kingdom's energy infrastructure. According to Saudi Press Agency, each of these projects will follow a build-own-operate (BOO) model. The successful bidder will maintain full ownership of the special purpose vehicle (SPV) established to develop and manage the Independent Storage Provider (ISP) project. Each SPV will engage in a 15-year Storage Services Agreement with SPPC, ensuring long-term collaboration and stability. The total capacity of the Group 1 BESS projects is set at 2000 MW/4Hrs, equating to 8000 MWh. The individual projects include the Al-Muwyah BESS ISP and Haden BESS ISP, both located in the Makkah Region, each with a capacity of 500MW/4Hrs. Additionally, the Al-Khushaybi BESS ISP in the Qassim Region and the Al-Kahafa BESS ISP in the Hail Region each offer the same capacity. This newly launched energy storage initiative is a pivotal component of the Kingdom's strategy to achieve 50% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030.
