SPA Documents Al-Khous Craft in Najran at Founding Day Celebrations

General

Riyadh: The Al Khous craft weaving palm fronds is one of the traditional crafts in Najran, forming part of the region’s cultural and social heritage and highlighting the skills and arts the ancestors used in their daily lives.

According to Saudi Press Agency, during a tour by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) at the “Memory of the Land” event, organized by the Ministry of Culture in celebration of Founding Day, craftswoman Um Abdullah explained that Al-Khous is a craft that derives its raw material from palm fronds, which are used to make various items such as bags, mats, brooms, and others.

She noted that the craft relies on weaving dry palm fronds after they are cut, washed, dried, and bundled. The fronds are then soaked in water to soften them, sewn together, and shaped into fabric. The edges are trimmed, and thorns are removed to make them ready for coloring and then crafting into various items.
