Somali Minister calls for urgent assistance for her country’s drought crisis

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia Khadija Al-Makhzoumi on Tuesday, called on the Arab countries to launch an urgent appeal to the international community to quickly assist Somalia in limiting the repercussions of the drought crisis, which “threatens a catastrophe.” “Without immediate assistance, the humanitarian situation will get out of control and will turn into a disaster or famine in Somaliland,” Minister Al-Makhzoumi said in a speech while chairing the third session of the Council of Arab Ministers concerned with meteorology and climate.

She referred to the drought crisis in her country, which affected about 7.8 million Somalis, indicating that Somalia is the country most affected by climate change.

Al-Makhzoumi said that the Somali government has taken many measures to confront the damages of climate change, calling on Arab countries to support Somalia, especially in the field of expertise and training.

On the other hand, she called on the parties in Sudan to stop the fighting and resolve the crisis through peaceful means
