Hail: The holy month of Ramadan provides an opportunity to reinforce healthy lifestyle habits. Individuals with diabetes, however, require careful regulation of meals and regular blood sugar monitoring to ensure safe fasting and avoid health complications.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Clinical Nutritionist at the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center of the Hail Health Cluster, Bandar Al-Shammari, stressed the importance of advanced dietary planning during Ramadan to safeguard the health of diabetic patients. He emphasized that consulting a physician before fasting is essential to assess a patient's ability to fast and adjust medication dosages when necessary.
Al-Shammari explained that iftar should be gradual and moderate. He advised avoiding excessive intake of sweets and sugary Ramadan beverages, which may cause sudden spikes in blood glucose levels. He noted that suhoor is a critical meal for diabetics and is preferably delayed. It should include fiber- and protein-rich foods such as whole grains, yogurt, eggs, and legumes. These foods help slow glucose absorption and reduce the risk of hypoglycemia during fasting hours. He also underscored the importance of adequate fluid intake between iftar and suhoor.
He further highlighted the necessity of regularly monitoring blood sugar levels. He advised patients to break their fast if symptoms of hypo- or hyperglycemia appear, stressing that health and safety must take priority.
