Separation Surgery for Moroccan Conjoined Twins Commences in Riyadh

Riyadh:The medical team of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme has initiated the separation surgery for Moroccan conjoined twins Saja and Doha, who are 13 months old. This procedure is being conducted at King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital in Riyadh, following the directives of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, the Supervisor General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) and the head of the medical and surgical team, stated that the twins arrived in Saudi Arabia on April 24, 2026. After extensive examinations and consultations, it was determined that the twins are conjoined at the chest and abdomen, sharing membranes around critical organs including the heart, liver, and intestines.

Dr. Al Rabeeah explained that the surgery will be conducted in six stages over an estimated 10-hour period, with the involvement of 23 consultants, specialists, nurses, and technical staff. The procedure carries a success rate exceeding 70%.

This surgery marks the fourth separation of Moroccan conjoined twins and is the 73rd case managed by the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme. Since its inception in 1990, the programme has provided care for 159 sets of twins from 28 countries spanning five continents.
