Senate committee discusses preventing smoking e-cigarettes in public places

The Senate Health Committee is discussing the proposal submitted by Representative Muhammad Emara regarding the treatment of “smoking electronic cigarettes and vaping in the same way as usual cigarettes, and the application of the current rules for preventing smoking them in public places in general and among students on campus in particular.

The committee also discussed the proposal regarding activating some mechanisms to help raise health awareness within medical institutions.

In 2021, Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued a press release, stating that 17.7 percent of Egyptians are smokers.

According to the agency, the figure represents about 18 million people according to 2020 population estimates.

The percentage of smokers among males is 35.6 percent, compared to 0.3 percent among females.
