Saudi Watermelon: A Ramadan Staple

Riyadh: The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) highlighted the strong demand for locally grown watermelons within Saudi markets. In 2023, national watermelon production surpassed 613,632 tons, showcasing the robust capacity of domestic agriculture to satisfy local needs.

According to Saudi Press Agency, MEWA reported a remarkable 98% self-sufficiency rate in watermelon production, a testament to the Kingdom’s commitment to bolstering local agricultural output and supporting global food security.

During the holy month of Ramadan, MEWA encourages consumers to prioritize locally sourced watermelons. The fruit is celebrated for its exceptional quality and nutritional benefits, including high water and vitamin content, which aid in hydration and replenish fluids lost during fasting. Choosing local produce strengthens the national economy and advances sustainability objectives in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
